The beautiful city of Valencia hosted the 1st National Conference of the Spanish Society of Disinfection and Sterilization (1ra Jornada Nacional de la Sociedad Española de Desinfección y Esterilización- SEDE) on 24 and 25 May. About 200 professionals in the field of reprocessing, including managers of Sterilization Services, Nursing, Preventive Medicine, Industry and Health Authorities, participated in this enriching meeting, where topics of particular relevance and that in recent years, are affecting the world of reprocessing of medical devices were discussed.

Ms. Elena Lorenzo Marfil, head of MATACHANA MIEC, opened the day with a conference entitled “New challenges in the Reprocessing Units”, which addressed issues with the technification of surgical practice and the emergence of robotics, the ecological footprint of the health system and finally, the lack of stability of the staff working in the Sterilization Units, with the consequent problems that this generates on the repetitiveness and safety in the processes. Similarly, other aspects of special relevance were discussed, such as the new Royal Decree on Medical Devices 192/2023 and its impact on these services, the importance of the sterile material store, the transport of dirty and sterile material in the hospital environment and an interesting review of the critical, semi-critical and non-critical concepts, carried out by Dr. Daniel Troncoso, from the Hospital Príncipe de Asturias de Alcalá de Henares.

1ra JORNADA DE LA SOCIEDAD ESPAÑOLA DE DESINFECCIÓN Y ESTERILIZACIÓN (SEDE), VALENCIA – ESPAÑA

These conferences highlighted the need to be prepared and properly trained for all the challenges we face, which is why it is vitally important that all those in charge and managers of these services are up to date on all these issues and transmit to their colleagues all those aspects that must be taken into account to ensure the safety of our patients, promote the welfare of workers and ensure the full functionality of all reusable medical devices. Therefore, a clear culture of reprocessing should be rooted in the institutions.

MATACHANA would like to thank the president of the SEDE, Dr. Vicente Zanón for his special involvement in this conference, as well as the entire management team of this society, for their hard work so that they could be carried out with the success achieved.
